Burtown House and Gardens, Co. Kildare

The Irish historical house named Burtown House is one of two 17th-century houses in County Kildare to never have been sold. And the only house that you can visit, and have guided tours by family members. It is the only original Quaker house in Ireland. That can be visited that is still lived in by the family that built it from this period.

Burtown House is an early Georgian house located near Athy, Co. Kildare.

Surrounded by lush flower, vegetable, and woodland gardens with beautiful parks and farmland walks open to the public.

The gardens at Burtown House are made up of several areas. Including large herbaceous borders, shrubberies, a rock garden, a yew walk divided by a pergola, a sundial garden, an old orchard, a more formal stable yard garden, a walled organic vegetable garden and a large woodland garden surrounded on all sides by water.

This woodland, known as the Nutgrove, hosts a fine collection of candelabra primulas, hostas, ferns, and iris, amongst other plants. There are many old roses, paeonies, and clematis, and a walled vegetable garden. That has been in continuous production for over 150 years.

Throughout the parkland and gardens of Burtown, there are large sculptures from Eileen MacDonagh, Catherine Green, Shane Jackson, and a host of Zimbabwean artists. From huge stone sculptures to smaller more intermit pieces hidden around the corners. Sculpture and art shows are hosted throughout the seasons.

Burtown House also has an organic restaurant serving delicious food, an artisan deli farm shop & luxury accommodations.

The award-winning farm-to-fork restaurant The Green Barn serves organic delicious food. Jo’s Pantry is a deli & artisan food shop selling lots of good things to eat. The Stable Yard House is located in the stable courtyard garden. And provides accommodation for up to 8 people seeking a luxury holiday rental in Kildare.

I visited Burtown House 2nd of March. Their manager was very pleasant and welcoming and did not charge us for visiting the gardens. The place itself was beautiful with lovely walks even in cold March. The gardens of Burtown House have to be amazing in the spring and summer.
