Snow in March at Carlow Town

We had Snow in March at Carlow Town.

Snow in Ireland is a very rare phenomenon ❄☃

The country rarely sees any snow at all. Snow days average at only 10-15 days out of the year and generally only reaches depths of 1-2 cm; with higher chances for snow the further north and inland you go. However, Irish mountains can see extensive snow for weeks at a time during their winter seasons.

Mountainous regions in Ireland, such as the Wicklow Mountains, are covered in snow for as many as 30 days during winter.

January and February are the months in which snow is most frequent but it’s not uncommon to have snow in any of the months from November to April. Snow has been reported in May and September. On some of these occasions, the falls have been considerable but the snow melted quickly.

In Carlow since I lived here, since 2014:

  • in 2019 snowing also in March (3rd of March).

So how is the weather in March in Carlow?

March is known as a chilly month. The average maximum daytime temperature in Carlow in March lies at 10.0°C. The mean minimum temperature is 5.0°C (often the minimum temperature is noted at night).

In Carlow during March is overcast or mostly cloudy about 67% of the time.

I always check the weather in Carlow town on Met Éireann, Ireland’s National Meteorological Service.
